Dear Music Supporter,
In 2011, the fifth annual Salem Jazz and Soul Festival took place. We
held kicked off the season with the City of Salem's Jazz Appreciation
event and our spring fundraiser at the PEM in April, then over the
summer we staged four free musical performances in conjunction with
Berklee College of Music in historic Derby Square. Our main event -
the 2-day Salem Jazz and Soul Festival - took place in August,
drawing our biggest crowds yet. We closed out the year with a bash
in November. Over 5,000 people enjoyed our free events this year.
Our main event, the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival, featured 12 hours
of live music, a VIP area, crafts by local artisans — all on the Salem
Willows' beautiful shoreline. The festival also featured a Kids Tent
where children and their parents explored musical instruments and
connected with local music educators. We staged mini-music
education classes like guitar instruction and discussions about music
theory. We were pleased to introduce our first ever Student Art
Contest winners as well, kids from grades 3-5 who submitted works of
art based on the 2011 theme "What Music Means to Me."
SJSF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. In addition to allowing us
to provide free music performances to the public, proceeds from the
festival benefit music education programs on the North Shore of
Massachusetts. In our first 5 years of operation, we've raised almost
$25,000 for music education programs on the North Shore. In Salem
alone, this means all public schools now have some form of new
music equipment for the first time in history.
In 2012, we're once again committed to producing great music events
and expanding our donations to music education programs. Our
2012 Sponsorship Brochure provides details about the impact of our
programs in the community, our plans for growth, and ways you can
help support the arts as an individual or an organization. Any
donation - big or small - will directly help our cause. We are a
federally recognized non-profit organization, so donations to the
festival are tax deductible to the extent allowed under IRS tax codes.
