About Gilberto Rivera & Rumba 4
Get ready to dance! Gilberto Rivera is at once an exciting
guitarist/cuatro player, band leader, cultural ambassador and
exceptional singer/entertainer who has performed to
multitudes internationally to enthusiastic response. For over
10 years, Gilberto led the top-tier salsa band Rumba Nama
which performed at many festivals, salsa nights and events
while also keeping a weekly residency at the famed Johnny
D's Uptown Music Club. Gilberto also performed with many
other excellent touring bands including Tropical Sound, Jorge
Arce y Grupo Humano, Sonabo and Bandon 33.
Gilberto will be performing with Rumba4, a salsa ensemble
that includes some impressive talent, sure to sound much
larger than their 5-piece band. Rumba4 features Daniel
Abreu (Saxophone/Piano/Vocals) and Mik Mersha
(Bass/Vocals) of Salem's own Los Sugar Kings as well as
the unbeatable percussion section of Maestro Miguel Beato
and Maestro Amado Rodriguez. Word on the street is that
Gilberto Rivera y Rumba4 plan to bring exciting and
sometimes unexpected material in both Spanish and English
for your dancing and listening pleasure.
About Greg Coles
Greg has taught thousands of people of all ages and abilities
to dance and has shown many how dance fits into most every
setting and occasion. He is an expert at helping people smile
and dance and his energy is contagious. People approach
Greg from all walks of life to either begin dancing or to
improve upon their existing skills. He began training at a
young age, and has studied many dance styles throughout his
life. Most notably, he studied at the Alvin Ailey School in New
York where he was offered a scholarship, met the famous
Ailey, who put Greg in charge of his personal archives as a
summer project. While in the clubs, Greg’s enthusiasm and
natural inclination to voluntarily show beginner dancers the
ropes resulted in an invitation to teach his first classes in
Boston, at Studio 4—an organization that leased space at
the Jeanette Neil Dance Studio. And since that time, he never
stopped teaching. In 1996, he assisted other classes and
soon after, began teaching several classes all along the North
Shore.
Today, Greg teaches African Dance at Tufts University where
he is a part-time professor. He has provided instruction in
African and Latin Dance at Salem State University and other
North Shore schools and colleges. He frequently shares his
talents with many charitable organizations, temples, churches
and schools for all ages. Greg's style is unique and
unforgettable and his passion is clear: he is a student of
African and Latin Dance and his commitment to both is
contagious.
