Overview
In addition to allowing us to produce free music events for the public, proceeds
from the festival benefit music education programs on the North Shore of
Massachusetts.

In our first two years of operation, we donated $8,500 to schools in the Salem
community. In 2009, music education programs in our communities received $6,000
from the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival, and another $1,000 was earmarked to bring
musicians into Salem schools. In 2010, despite a tough fundraising climate, we
raised $4,000 for music education programs. 2010 beneficiaries include Salem
High School, Salem Middle School and Bates Elementary School.

Music Education in our Festival Series
Our annual music series is rich with music education opportunities, offered free to
the public.  The SJSF/Berklee Summer Series performances incorporate student-
run mini-music education classes on topics ranging from instrumentation to band
collaboration to writing and more.  Our main festival event also incorporates 4-5
music education classes on an equally diverse set of topics, such as last year’s
workshops on drumming, guitar and vocals.  Our main festival also includes a kid’s
tent, where children and their parents can explore different music equipment, and
access a resource board where they can learn about local music instructors and
organizations.

Music in the Classroom
As part of “Music in the Schools Month” in 2011 we facilitated workshops between
Salem State University and Salem High school, which included college professors
and students as guest speakers at the High School.  The High School Jazz band
enjoyed an open rehearsal with college students.  In addition, the high school brass
band received a personal/private lesson with Salem State students.

Scholarships
In 2011, SJSF will sponsor two Salem High School students' participation in a jazz
camp.

Student Art Contest
As we expand our music education initiatives, SJSF is partnering with art teachers
in Salem public elementary schools to launch our first ever Student Art Contest!
We invited students in Grades 3 - 5 at any public school in Salem to create an
original work of art that expresses our theme for 2011, "What Music Means to Me."
All the entries were displayed at the City of Salem's 2nd Annual
Jazz Appreciation
Day, a free event featuring a performance by the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival
Allstars.  The public is welcome to join us and vote for their favorite entries!  Two
winners from each school will be chosen.  Winners will be announced during the
first day of the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival (Saturday, August 20).

“Salem High School has used (SJSF) funds to purchase
new equipment, which has allowed us to pass older
equipment down to the middle and grammar schools.  For
the first time in history, all schools now have some form of
music training taking place because of this."  Cynthia
Napierkowski, Music Director, Salem High School
